When Jesus Interrupts Your Status Quo
In the book of Matthew 8, we come across two demon possessed men coming out of the tombs, in the region of Gadarenes. They were so violent, that no one could ever use that way. As soon as they saw Jesus, they begged him to send them into the heard of pigs that were feeding close by. He commanded them to go, they came out of the men and went into the pigs and the entire herd of pigs rushed down the steep into the lake and drowned. Those tending the pigs ran off and reported everything that had happened. “Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region” (verse 34).
If you read the same story in Luke 8:37, it says that “Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.”
In reading the last verse, I was so bothered by the fact that this town pleaded with Jesus to leave their region after witnessing a miracle. What was it about the two men being set free that bothered them so much? If you have such a powerful man standing right before you, wouldn’t you want to see what else he can do for you? As I sat down pondering on these questions, I realized that the people of the town are no different from us.
There’s something that happens when Jesus steps into your world. He upsets your status quo. He peels you off layer by layer and exposes your sin, pain, insecurities, etc. People don’t like that. When Jesus steps into your world, you can’t stay the same. Most times, people would rather stay the same because it’s comfortable, than change because it requires a certain level of discomfort and sacrifice. People also don’t like to change because they feel like they are giving up control of their lives. But no one is in control of their lives.
Fear kept them from experiencing a life changing transformation because they were afraid of what that would entail. Isn’t it amazing how we’d rather stay in our disfunction because that’s what we know? Today, if Jesus steps into your world, give him a chance and don’t ask him to leave. I’d rather follow Jesus blindly than to try and be in control of my own life.
About My Outfit:
When it comes to jumpsuits, I’m a lover and a hater. I love them because they are easy to style, all you need to do is worry about what shoes to wear them with. I hate them because they are a pain when you need to use the bathroom, it’s a whole situation. I really like this long-sleeved denim jumpsuit though; it’s perfect for the fall. When it’s not too cold, it doesn’t require any extra layers.
My studded pumps are from Steve Madden. They are super high but extremely comfortable because of the platform. You can purchase similar looks below.
